The Boca Grande Guide
Everything you need to know about Gasparilla Island — from the best beaches and kayaking routes to dining and getting around.
Florida's Best-Kept
Secret Island
Gasparilla Island is a 7-mile barrier island on Florida's Gulf Coast, accessible only by bridge. Home to the charming community of Boca Grande, the island has maintained its unhurried, old-Florida character while offering world-class beaches, fishing, and outdoor adventures. This is our guide to making the most of your time here.
Getting Around Boca Grande
Gasparilla Island is small enough to explore without a car — and frankly, the best way to experience it is without one. Golf carts are the primary mode of transportation on the island, and you'll find them parked outside every restaurant, shop, and beach access point. Bikes are equally popular, particularly on the island's dedicated 7-mile bike path that runs from the historic district to Gasparilla Island State Park. We recommend renting both for the ultimate island experience.

Gasparilla Island is blessed with some of the most pristine beaches on Florida's Gulf Coast. Gasparilla Island State Park at the southern tip offers wide, uncrowded beaches with stunning views of Boca Grande Pass — one of the world's premier tarpon fishing grounds. The beaches along the Gulf side of the island are consistently ranked among Florida's best, with powder-white sand and crystal-clear water.

Kayaking the Mangroves
The protected waters on the bay side of Gasparilla Island are home to one of the most remarkable ecosystems in Florida. Ancient red mangroves create a network of tunnels and channels that are best explored by kayak or paddleboard. The shallow, crystal-clear water reveals sea grass beds, horseshoe crabs, and a remarkable diversity of marine life. Rent a kayak or SUP and explore these magical waterways at your own pace — we provide detailed route maps and all the equipment you need.

Cycling the Island Path
The Gasparilla Island bike path is one of the great cycling experiences in Florida. The 7-mile paved path runs the length of the island, passing through the historic downtown, along the Gulf shoreline, and through Gasparilla Island State Park to the lighthouse at the southern tip. The flat terrain makes it accessible to all ages, and the scenery — swaying palms, turquoise water, and the occasional dolphin — makes it genuinely unforgettable.

Tarpon Fishing in Boca Grande
Boca Grande is known as the Tarpon Capital of the World — and for good reason. Boca Grande Pass, at the southern tip of Gasparilla Island, is the deepest natural pass on Florida's Gulf Coast and serves as a migration corridor for Atlantic tarpon. Every spring and early summer, thousands of tarpon — some exceeding 200 pounds — congregate in the pass, drawing anglers from around the world. Even if you're not fishing, watching the boats work the pass during tarpon season is a spectacle unto itself.
Dining in Boca Grande
Despite its small size, Boca Grande punches well above its weight when it comes to dining. The Gasparilla Inn's Pink Elephant restaurant is a beloved island institution, while South Beach Bar & Grille offers fresh seafood with stunning Gulf views. The Loose Caboose is a local favorite for casual lunches, and the island's small downtown has a charming collection of boutiques and cafes. Our team is always happy to share their current favorites — just ask when you stop in.
